The Dodgers begin a series in St. Louis, the Rays get a visit from the Yankees, and the Blue Jays get ready to face King Felix.
Colliding in the Junior Circuit . . .
A.J. Burnett (9-4, 3.74 ERA) will get the ball on Monday night as the Yankees begin a road series in Tampa Bay against the Rays and James Shields (6-6, 3.70 ERA). Burnett has been on a roll for New York, as the team is 5-0 in his last five outings; the righthander held the Orioles to two runs over seven innings last time out. Righthander Shields had to settle for a no-decision against the White Sox in his last start, surrendering just two earned runs on four hits over his 6 2-3 innings.
Also on the American League schedule for Monday: Kansas City at Baltimore, Oakland at Boston, Detroit at Texas, the White Sox at Minnesota, Cleveland at the Angels, and Toronto at Seattle. Ricky Romero (8-4, 3.44 ERA) gets the nod for the Blue Jays in that contest; the lefthander beat the Indians last time out, giving up four runs in 5 1-3 innings. The Mariners will counter with Felix Hernandez (11-3, 2.45 ERA); Seattle has won the righthander’s last eight starts.
Clashing in the Senior Circuit . . .
It’ll be Randy Wolf (5-4, 3.45 ERA) vs. Chris Carpenter (8-3, 2.26 ERA) on Monday night as the Cardinals play host to the Dodgers. Lefthander Wolf picked up a win in his start against the Reds last time out, giving up just two earned runs on four hits over his 7 1-3 innings of work. Righthander Carpenter allowed just two earned runs over eight innings in his start against the Astros last time out, but got stuck with a no-decision. The righthander won his previous three outings.
Rounding out the National League slate for Monday: San Diego at Cincinnati, Colorado at the Mets, Washington at Milwaukee, Philadelphia at Arizona, Houston at the Cubs, and Pittsburgh at San Francisco. Paul Maholm (6-4, 4.63 ERA) gets the start for the Pirates on Monday; the lefthander was roughed up for seven runs by the Brewers last time out. Tim Lincecum (10-3, 2.45 ERA) is also coming off a shaky outing, giving up four runs in five innings against the Braves.
