The New York Jets proved once again why they’re probably the best team in the NFL right now when they ran back an interception for a touchdown against Brett Favre and ended up covering another spread in the NFL sportsbook on Monday night.
Ahead by only 2 points, 22 to 20, as 4-point faves, the Jets were in danger of losing against the spread before Minnesota QB Brett Favre, like he has done so many times in the past, threw the pick to Jets’ DB Dwight Lowery who returned it for a TD.
The Jets are the best in the AFC against the spread, but there are other teams that football handicappers should be looking to back in the NFL sports book.
Let’s get to the AFC Top 5 and the AFC Bottom 5!
AFC Top 5 NFL Betting
1.New York Jets 4-1 (4-1 ATS) – - They have two terrific running backs in Shonn Green and LaDainian Tomlinson, a QB that doesn’t make mistakes in Mark Sanchez, and an awesome D. They’re going to keep covering spreads as well because NFL odds makers haven’t bought into the idea that they can score a lot of points even though they average 27 points per game.
2.Pittsburgh Steelers 3-1 (3-1 ATS) – - Big Ben returning might actually hurt these guys in terms of their value in the NFL sports book to cover spreads. For example, they’re 14-point favorites to beat Cleveland this Sunday. That’s 2 touchdowns.
3.Kansas City Chiefs 3-1 (3-1 ATS) – - The Chiefs were a Dwayne Bowe catch away from upsetting the Colts this past Sunday. Instead, Bowe dropped the ball, the Chiefs never got another shot to put a TD on the board, and Indy ended up not only winning the game but covering the spread. KC should return to their spread covering ways as 4 ½ point dogs on the road against the discombobulated Houston Texans this Sunday.
4.Baltimore Ravens 4-1 (3-2 ATS) – - Did the NFL sports book odds makers really make the Baltimore Ravens a 3-point dog versus the New England Patriots this Sunday? Really? Uh…didn’t the Patriots trade away a guy named Randy Moss last week? Ravens over Pats on the money line appears to be the wager to make in this game.
5.Indianapolis Colts 3-2 (3-2 ATS) – - They got lucky against KC but I agree with 72% of my peers who believe they destroy the -3 point spread they face this Sunday versus the Washington Redskins. Peyton had a bad game against the Chiefs. That doesn’t happen 2 weeks in a row.
AFC Bottom 5 NFL Betting
1.Buffalo Bills 0-5 (1-4 ATS) – - What will the bye week do for this team? Probably nothing. At least they’ve decided on Fred Jackson as their RB.
2.Cleveland Browns 1-4 (2-3 ATS) – - Bad to worse? Maybe. The good news is that they get 14 points this Sunday. The bad news is that they may have to start rookie QB Colt McCoy against the best defense in the NFL.
3.San Diego Chargers 2-3 (2-3 ATS) – - WR Malcolm Floyd is finally clicking with QB Phillip Rivers but now the defense is playing like garbage and the running back situation is a mess. I believe they will still make the playoffs but I’m not sure what to think about them covering a 9-point spread versus the Rams on the road this Sunday.
4.Cincinnati Bengals 2-3 (2-3 ATS) – - T.O. believes that he’s underpaid at 2 mil a year. That’s exactly what this struggling team needs, T.O., you complaining about your salary. The NFL sports book odds makers are ecstatic that this team is on a bye this week because they’d have trouble figuring out what to do with them.
5.Denver Broncos 2-3 (2-3 ATS) – - I chose these guys over the Raiders, who are also 2 and 3 ATS, for the Bottom 5 because Oakland beat the San Diego Chargers straight up. The Broncos aren’t a bad team, though. If they can get to their bye at 4 and 5, they might have a shot to make the playoffs because their schedule becomes significantly easier after the bye.
