Daily Sports Roundup: July 24
The Cardinals try to knock off the Phillies in Philadelphia, the Jays meet the rival Rays, and the CFL serves up two contests.
Colliding in the Junior Circuit . . .
Roy Halladay (11-3, 2.73 ERA) will get the ball for the Blue Jays on Friday night as they play host to the Rays and Matt Garza (6-7, 3.80 ERA). Righthander Halladay impressed his potential suitors last time out, holding the Red Sox to one earned run on six hits over nine innings of work in a victory. Righthander Garza had to settle for a no-decision versus the Royals last time out, surrendering three earned runs on six hits in five innings. Garza defeated the Jays back on June 30.
Also on the American League schedule for Friday: Oakland at the Yankees, Baltimore at Boston, Minnesota at the Angels, Cleveland at Seattle, Texas at Kansas City, and a doubleheader between the White Sox and Tigers in Detroit. The Rangers/Royals matchup has Scott Feldman (8-3, 3.87 ERA) taking on Zack Greinke (10-5, 2.08 ERA). Righthander Feldman lost to the Twins in his most recent start, while righthander Greinke hasn’t picked up a victory since June 28.
Clashing in the Senior Circuit . . .
The Cardinals and Phillies begin a series in Philadelphia on Friday night, with Joel Pineiro (8-9, 3.09 ERA) taking on J.A. Happ (7-0, 2.68 ERA). Righthander Pineiro is 2-0 with a no-decision over his last three starts, surrendering just five runs (four earned) over those 23 innings of work. Lefthander Happ has yet to be tagged with a loss so far this season, and he’s won each of his last two starts (versus the Marlins and Pirates). Happ gave up just one run in those 14 innings.
Making up the rest of the National League slate for Friday: Cincinnati at the Cubs, San Diego at Washington, Atlanta at Milwaukee, the Mets at Houston, Pittsburgh at Arizona, Florida at the Dodgers, and San Francisco at Colorado. Matt Cain (11-2, 2.32 ERA) gets the start for the Giants on Friday; righthander Cain hasn’t lost since June 26, and he’s allowed just three earned runs over his last 22 1-3 innings. Jason Hammel (5-4, 4.26 ERA) gets the ball for the Rockies.
Rounding out the Roundup . . .
The Canadian Football League offers up a pair of contests on Friday night, with Toronto at Winnipeg and Calgary at British Columbia. The Argonauts sit at 1-2 both straight-up and against-the-spread on the season, while the Blue Bombers are 1-2 SU and 2-1 ATS. Winnipeg is a 4-point favorite for Friday night. Meanwhile, the Stampeders are at 1-2 SU and ATS on the year, while the Lions have the exact same SU and ATS marks. Oddsmakers like Calgary’s chances on the road in the nightcap, as they’ve been listed as 3-point favorites for the game.
