2010 Big 10 Preview: Who will Win?
With a just few weeks left until college football’s kickoff, it’s never to early to start making your wagers. But what are the football expert picks? Let’s find out, as we break down the Big 10 odds in this preview.
Ohio State (-250): After an impressive victory over Oregon in last year’s Rose Bowl, many believe that this Ohio State team has what it takes to play in their third National Championship game in five years.
To do that, they’ll need quarterback Terrelle Pryor to continue to develop the way he did late last year. After struggling for much of 2010, Pryor was a different man down the stretch, throwing for six touchdowns and just two interceptions in his last five games, including victories over Penn State, Iowa and Oregon.
On defense, the Buckeyes return depth and talent everywhere, and will be led by All-American defensive end Cameron Heyward, who spurned the NFL for one more title shot in Columbus.
The Buckeyes schedule is a bit daunting however, as they will have to travel to Big 10 powers Wisconsin and Iowa, and will host Penn State and Michigan.
Ohio State is a one of the favorites in the college football expert picks. But can they survive that daunting schedule to make you a winner in your bets?
Iowa (+350): 2009 was a magical season for the Hawkeyes, as they started out 9-0, before an injury to quarterback Ricky Stanzi and back-to-back losses to Northwestern and Ohio State ended their run at the Rose Bowl. Well, Stanzi is back, and he’s got help, as the Hawkeyes look to win that elusive Big 10 Championship.
As good as Stanzi was (9-0 in games he started and completed), he does need to improve on a dismal touchdown to interception ratio of just 17 to 15. Luckily he’s got maybe the deepest stable of running backs in college football joining him in the backfield, as Brandon Wegher and Adam Robinson combined for over 1400 yards and 13 touchdowns. Jewel Hampton returns as well, after he was sidelined for all of 2009 with a knee injury.
The Hawkeyes also boast the best front seven on defense in the Big 10, thanks to the return of superstar Adrian Claybourne at end, tackle Karl Klug and Jeremiah Hunter, a three year starter at linebacker.
Wisconsin (+350): Whenever you think about Wisconsin football, you think power running, thanks to big backs like Ron Dayne and P.J. Hill, who’ve called Madison home these last few years. Well, John Clay may be better than any of them.
The mammoth 248 lb. junior averaged five yards a carry last year, rushing for over 1500 yards and 18 touchdowns.
When looking at the football expert picks, Clay may do enough alone, to single-handedly take Wisconsin to a Big 10 title.
Penn State (+650): Over in Happy Valley, Joe Paterno has a lot of talent to replace, most notably quarterback Daryll Clark. Clark won 22 games the last two years, and now leaves the quarterbacking duties in the unsure hands of Kevin Newsome.
The Lions are certainly a long shot, but if we’ve learned anything over time, it’s never to doubt Joe Pa.
