1) James Madison over Virginia Tech – College Football Betting

This was an absolute stunner.

True, this was a hangover game. That one fact is not hard to appreciate. Moreover, Virginia Tech played this hangover game with just four days off, not the usual six (the Hokies previously played on Monday, Sept. 6, against Boise State). That factor likely added a certain degree of fragility to this contest.

Yet, it’s still a massive shock to the system. No one saw James Madison winning, even if a number of people felt the game would not be a blowout.

Virginia Tech did begin to move the ball with appreciable consistency in the second half, and the heavy favorite – which scheduled an opponent such as James Madison for a reason after the big brawl with Boise State – figured to win the game in the fourth quarter, as is usually the case when an FBS power encounters this scenario against an FCS foe.

There was just one problem: Virginia Tech continued to commit huge turnovers in the red zone. Darren Evans is not an erratic or undependable back, but on this day, he fumbled. Turnovers – not necessarily in aggregate, but certainly at the wrong times and places – sabotaged the Tech comeback attempt, and that’s how this bombshell developed in Blacksburg, Virginia.

2) Kansas over Georgia Tech – College Football Betting

The week before, Kansas was nonexistent in a humiliating 6-3 loss to North Dakota State. To a certain extent, it’s hard to deny the contention that the Jayhawks were looking ahead to their week-two battle with Georgia Tech, the defending ACC champions. However, Kansas was truly bad against North Dakota State. Moreover, Georgia Tech is not an easy team to prepare for. The Yellow Jackets’ defense might be horrible – and it was against Kansas on Saturday – but Tech’s offense is extremely potent and formidable. Yet, Kansas’ defense managed to contain Tech quarterback Josh Nesbitt and the rest of the triple-option offense commandeered by Yellow Jacket head coach Paul Johnson. Kansas made timely defensive stops and prevented Georgia Tech from popping off huge game-breaking runs. The Jayhawks were resourceful and managed to stay a step ahead of a Georgia Tech team that showed no rhythm and little cohesion on offense. This result certainly made jaws drop throughout the college football community.

3) Toledo over Ohio – College Football Betting

Ohio won the Little Ceasars Pizza Bowl last year, fresh off its Mid-American Conference East Division crown. The Bobcats figured to give Temple a strong run for the MAC East championship in 2010, but after suffering a surprising loss at home to a Toledo team that got rolled by Arizona in its season opener (41-2 is a complete beatdown), Ohio faces a huge uphill battle for the rest of its conference season. This ambush took a lot of college football pundits by surprise.

4) South Dakota over Minnesota – College Football Betting

On a day when one FCS team – James Madison – jolted the college football world, this result was less surprising but still notable. Minnesota’s program poured a lot of money into its new outdoor stadium. The Golden Gophers wanted to draw top recruits to Minneapolis by leaving the old and increasingly obsolete Metrodome. Well, after this embarrassing loss to the Coyotes of South Dakota, Minnesota has an FCS loss on its resume. That won’t bring prime talent to the Twin Cities.
